2/03/25 Rich Gannon shares incredible story behind why Patriots traded him. Rich Gannon might be best known in New England as the quarterback for the Oakland Raiders team that fell to the Patriots in the 2001 AFC Divisional Round, aka the "Tuck Rule Game." But the former NFL MVP actually began his professional career with the Patriots. WATCH ANYTIME FOR FREE Stream NBC10 Boston news for free, 24/7, wherever you are. That's right: New England selected Gannon -- a record-setting quarterback at the University of Delaware -- in the fourth round (98th overall) of the 1987 NFL Draft. But the Patriots ended up trading Gannon six days later to the Minnesota Vikings for a pair of draft picks in a move that seems head-scratching in hindsight. So, what prompted Gannon's trade?

2/01/25 Ranking 3 best Khalil Mack landing spots in 2025 NFL free agency. Los Angeles Chargers pass-rusher Khalil Mack has been playing in the NFL for 11 years now, and he remains one of the most feared pass rushers in the league. Mack has been in the league since 2014, when he was drafted with the No. 5 overall pick by the then-Oakland Raiders. Mack's quick rise from draft pick to superstar was even more impressive considering the fact that he wasn't exactly a big-time college player, at least in terms of where he went. Mack was a 2-star linebacker in the 2009 recruiting class and ended up signing with the Buffalo Bulls, which has been part of the MAC since 1999.

1/30/25 Miami Dolphins' bid for Super Bowl three-peat ended on 'sea of hands' Raiders touchdown. We look back: Dolphins' bid for three-peat Super Bowl started by playing the Oakland Raiders in an AFC divisional playoff game on Dec. 21, 1974.

1/27/25 The refs didn’t steal a Super Bowl trip from the Bills. The Chiefs’ excellence did.

Some will insist debatable calls were to blame for another heartbreaker for Buffalo. But they have to contend with a great footballing dynasty every year

From 1967 through 1975, the Oakland Raiders were the most successful team in professional football … in the regular season. They compiled a record of 95-24-7, and that winning percentage of .798 was a full 70 percentage points higher than the second-best team, the Dallas Cowboys. Those Raiders were packed with future Hall of Famers, and they had John Madden, one of the NFL’s best coaches, for most of that span.

And throughout that time, they were stopped from winning the big one by several different dynasties. They lost Super Bowl II to the Green Bay Packers, and were crossed off in successive seasons in the playoffs by the Miami Dolphins and the Pittsburgh Steelers – two more all-time teams. Oakland’s 7-8 postseason record tended to render everything else irrelevant. It wasn’t until 1976, when the Raiders went 13-1 in the regular season and poleaxed the Minnesota Vikings in Super Bowl XI, that they finally got that albatross of their backs.

1/17/25 Are the Eagles the most physical team in football? 'You could see it on the tape' against the Packers. The NFL is never going back to the days when the mere sight of Jack Tatum frightened the bejesus out of opposing receivers. When Tatum roamed the free safety position for the Oakland Raiders, the deep middle of the field was an enter-at-your-own-risk zone that most feared and some did actually avoid.

12/20/24 'Jeopardy!' contestants befuddled by final clue ripping Jets' Super Bowl drought. Sports fans almost everywhere watching "Jeopardy!" on Thursday night were probably screaming at their television. The "Final Jeopardy" clue was "Super Bowl History," and while sports is almost never an area of expertise for contestants, this clue was pretty easy. "It's the only team to play in the Super Bowl before Neil Armstrong's moon walk that has not been back to the big game since," the clue read. There weren't many options to choose from, as only five teams played in the Super Bowl from 1967 to 1969: the Green Bay Packers twice, the Oakland Raiders, the New York Jets (the answer), and the Baltimore Colts.

11/26/24 Xavier McKinney Marks the Spot In Green Bay's Secondary. It's true, Xavier McKinney says. Interceptions are like bananas, roses and parades in Kansas City every winter. They come in bunches until, suddenly, it's raining interceptions. Still, in a specific, related slice of professional football history, the longest streaks of consecutive games with at least one interception mostly predate the West Coast offense. When Oakland Raiders ballhawk Tom Morrow picked off at least one pass in eight consecutive games in late 1962 and early '63, he recorded the longest-ever stretch. But, even Morrow's own mother would note that offensive football wasn't anywhere near the same universe of modern football in sophistication or complexity. In fact, since Y2K, only

11/17/24 Jim Harbaugh Year 1 turnarounds: How Chargers coach has fared in first seasons with Michigan, 49ers, more. Jim Harbaugh was drafted with the 26th overall pick in the 1987 NFL Draft, spending time with the Bears, Colts, Ravens, and Chargers. Overall, Harbaugh had a 15-year playing career, highlighted by a Pro Bowl season and AFC Championship game appearance with San Diego in 1995. Not only would he be following in his dad Jack's footsteps, but Jim had already been serving as an NCAA-certified unpaid assistant coach for Jack at Western Kentucky for the final eight years of his career. Harbaugh likely could have joined the staff at WKU, but instead, he spent two years as the quarterbacks coach for the then-Oakland Raiders.

10/15/24 Ex-Patriots Exec Reveals Origin Of Bill Belichick's 'Do Your Job' Mantra. Bill Belichick made the “do your job” phrase a cultural staple during his illustrious two-decade-long run with the New England Patriots, however, to say the eight-time Super Bowl champion took inspiration for the motto would be an understatement. During Belichick's reign of dominance atop the AFC, New England was directly linked to their “do your job” attitude. Former Patriots executive Scott Pioli brought the origin of Belihick's “do your job” mantra to light, revealing that while the New England legend himself gets most of the credit, it was, in fact, another NFL great who coined the motto: Former owner of the then-Oakland Raiders Al Davis.
