Now, having been in the organization already for a year, the three-time American League All-Star and two-time Mariano Rivera Reliever of the Year Award-winner is trying to win the vacant Red Sox closer job. 3/10/25 Red Sox's Alex Cora Gives Honest Take On 3-Time All-Star Reliever's Struggles. It's never too wise to read into spring training results, but the Boston Red Sox can't be thrilled with what they've seen so far from potential closer Liam Hendriks. Hendriks, 36, was one of the top relievers in Major League Baseball from 2019 to 2022, making three All-Star appearances, twice winning the Mariano Rivera Award as the American League's best reliever, and striking out 359 batters across 236 innings. Hendriks survived a non-Hodgkins lymphoma diagnosis during the pre-2023 offseason, then underwent Tommy John surgery later that year.

2/27/25 Why Liam Hendriks is embracing 'jerk' moment at Red Sox spring training. Despite signing with the Boston Red Sox last spring, Liam Hendriks has still yet to pitch for the ball club in a regular season game. In the fourth inning, Hendriks pumped his fist like he was closing out a game and while he may have felt like a jerk, it's all about getting that mindset back. “You come across as kind of a [jerk] when you do it in the fourth inning of a Spring Training game,” said Hendriks.

2/26/25 Red Sox's Liam Hendriks Gives Hilarious Reaction To Explosive Celebration. Don't tell Boston Red Sox reliever Liam Hendriks it's only a spring training game. Hendriks, who spent all of last season recovering from Tommy John surgery and had several rehab outings in the minor leagues before being shut down, made his first appearance of the exhibition slate Wednesday and pitched a scoreless fourth inning in an 8-2 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays. Hendriks punched out Taylor Walls with a breaking ball to strand a runner at second, which led to an emphatic fist pump and a shouted expletive from Hendriks as he walked off the mound.

1/28/25 Red Sox Closer Candidate Prepared For Healthy 2025 Season. Liam Hendriks enters the 2025 season healthy as a prime candidate to be the closer for the Boston Red Sox. Hendriks shined in that role during previous stops with the then-Oakland Athletics and the Chicago White Sox. Now, it's time for him to restore those abilities and push the reshaped Red Sox bullpen to the playoffs for the first time since 2021. “It's fantastic,” Hendriks told NESN's Tom Caron on the “310 To Left” podcast.

12/10/24 Boston Red Sox Suggest Liam Hendriks Could Win Closer's Job in 2025. The Boston Red Sox could be preparing to use Liam Hendriks as their closer in 2025, according to comments made by Chief Baseball Officer Craig Breslow on Monday during the winter meetings. Breslow noted Liam Hendriks, who's recovering from Tommy John surgery, “should be fully healthy and comes with a pretty impressive track record at closing games,” leaving the door open for Hendriks to win the closer's role. This isn't necessarily surprising, as Hendriks has been an All-Star closer before, and the Red Sox have a need at the position after seeing Kenley Jansen and Chris Martin hit free agency.

12/08/24 Red Sox pitcher rips the proposed Golden At-Bat concept. The MLB has adopted some rule changes in recent years that would've been viewed as pretty radical not too long ago, implementing a pitch clock, capping mound visits, limiting pitching changes and increasing base sizes. Recently, MLB commissioner Rob Mandred discussed implementing a Golden At-Bat, which would allow a team to use any hitter for one single at-bat in a game no matter where the team is in their lineup. The concept doesn't seem to be close to happening anytime soon, but players like Boston Red Sox veteran reliever Liam Hendriks are already sharing some negative thoughts on it.

11/25/24 [The Cold Wire] - Liam Hendriks Has Honest Admission About Last Game In Oakland. The Oakland Athletics have not made the postseason in the past four years with their last appearance coming back in the shortened season of 2020. 11/16/24 Red Sox pitcher believes Boston is going 'full metal' this offseason. Last offseason, Boston Red Sox chairman Tom Werner stirred the fan base up by saying they were going "full throttle" and ended up making some pretty mild moves overall. Now, one of Boston's players is echoing a similar sentiment for this offseason, as Red Sox reliever Liam Hendriks spoke on the team's pursuit of free agent outfielder Juan Soto. "Without a doubt (the Soto stuff is exciting)," Hendriks said on "Foul Territory" earlier this week.

11/15/24 [The Score] - Hendriks saddened by Athletics' move: Rewarded owner's 'ineptitude'. Liam Hendriks spent more seasons with the Athletics than any other team in his career, so he has strong feelings about them moving out of Oakland."It definitely sucks," Hendriks said during an appearance on "Foul Territory.""Both my wife and I watched that last game in Oakland and I teared up. It was an emotional day."Hendriks, who's under contact with the Boston Red Sox, spent some of his best years with the Athletics between 2016 and '20.The right-hander credited the organization for giving him an opportunity to prove himself, which allowed him to improve from "mediocre" to one of the game's top closers."I don't think without Oakland, I'd be where I am today," Hendriks explained. The Australian hurler also didn't hold back when pointing the finger at A's owner John Fisher as the reason Major League Baseball no longer exists in Oakland."It just sucks. I've said it before, but you're rewarding the ineptitude of an owner," Hendriks said.Fisher, son of Gap founders Donald Fisher and Doris F. Fisher, inherited his fortune from his parents. In 2005, he sold his ownership stake in the San Francisco Giants to buy the Athletics and has been accused of deliberately tanking the franchise so he could move it to Las Vegas. The Athletics will play at a minor-league park in West Sacramento for the 2025-27 campaigns before moving to Las Vegas.

9/25/24 Report: Red Sox reliever, ex-Boston champion clashed as part of ugly White Sox rift. Two relievers with Red Sox ties were at the center of a rift that fractured the White Sox clubhouse last season, according to a new, in-depth report on Chicago's record-breaking season from ESPN. As part of a long look at how the White Sox got to the point where they are one loss away from setting the modern-day record for losses in a single season, Buster Olney and Jesse Rogers revealed that a rift between current Red Sox pitcher Liam Hendriks and other veteran pitchers on the team — boiled over in an ugly way as Hendriks made his way back from cancer last spring.

9/22/24 Red Sox $10 Million Star Expected To Be 'Shut Down,' Per Insider. The Boston Red Sox have dealt with plenty of injuries this season. Boston was hoping to get healthier in the second half of the season and make a run at a playoff spot, but things haven't worked out in the team's favor. Now, the Red Sox have just a few games left, and they won't be in the postseason. The Red Sox should be better next year though and one player who will play a major role is star closer Liam Hendriks.

9/20/24 Comeback Over? Red Sox Will 'Probably Shut Down' Reliever. Sign In BOSTON -- Red Sox reliever Liam Hendriks was on the comeback trail. But it looks like that path came to an end and the veteran reliever will have to wait until next season to make his Red Sox debut. "He's not playing catch," Red Sox manager Alex Cora said prior to Friday's matchup against the Minnesota Twins at Fenway Park. "So basically where we're at right now, probably shut him down. Feeling better. The (cortisone) shot actually kind of worked." Hendriks eyed a return for the end of August as he recovered from Tommy John surgery, which he had last season. It looked like Hendriks would accomplish that after ramping up his rehab after the All-Star Break and he made six rehab appearances

Hendriks was AL Comeback Player of the Year in 2023 after returning from treatment for Stage 4 non-Hodgkin lymphoma. “He's taking a look at it and he is going to let us know, but it seems like probably we're going to shut him down.”

9/12/24 Boston's Liam Hendriks likely to shut down in attempt to return this season from Tommy John surgery. Boston Red Sox pitcher Liam Hendriks likely will be shut down because of forearm soreness, ending his attempt to return in 2024 from Tommy John surgery. Hendriks has soreness on the outside of his forearm that isn't connected with the surgery, Red Sox manager Alex Cora said before Thursday's series opener at the New York Yankees. A scan will be reviewed by Texas Rangers team physician Dr. Keith Meister, who operated last year.
