BOS8/4 3:56 PM Adley Rutschman (C-BOS) Trading Rutschman could help the Orioles, but it's a sign of how badly their plans went awry. Trading Adley Rutschman may work out for the Baltimore Orioles in the long run, but it still signaled just how badly the franchise's plans have gone awry. They acquired three of Boston’s top five prospects, according to MLB.com. Fans generally understand the logic of dealing a player who might become a free agent in the next year or two. But what makes this trade harder to stomach is the year and a half of failure that led up to it. Seven years after drafting Rutschman with the top overall pick, the Orioles have one division title and one wild card to show for it. They're in danger of finishing under .500 for a second straight season.

The Phillies did make a last-minute swap that sent reliever Seth Johnson to the A’s for right-handed-hitting outfielder Colby Thomas, a 25-year-old former third-round pick who […]

LAD8/4 9:00 AM Tarik Skubal (P-LAD) Baseball's trade deadline: The Dodgers (and Red Sox?!) are going for it. Is anybody else?. By the time the trade deadline passed, the Dodgers had taken their big swing by landing Tarik Skubal. The Red Sox had thrown caution to the wind, sending prospects every which way to acquire Adley Rutschman and others. Other contenders took a more tepid approach. Milwaukee added right-hander Dustin May. The New York Yankees made a solid pickup in infielder Luis García Jr., but general manager Brian Cashman said they tried for Skubal and Rutschman and didn’t get either. Atlanta was fairly quiet. Detroit and Baltimore became sellers despite being very much in the playoff race.

STL8/4 2:40 AM Alec Burleson (OF/1B/DH-STL) Alec Burleson hits 3 homers for Cardinals at Yankee Stadium after trade deadline passes. Alec Burleson was so relieved to stay with the St. Louis Cardinals that he produced one of the best power displays in team history. After the frenzy of Monday’s trade deadline, Burleson hit a trio of two-run homers off three different pitchers, including a drive into the second deck in right field that capped a seven-run eighth inning as St. Louis outslugged the New York Yankees for a 13-7 victory. Burleson had the first three-homer game by a Cardinals player since catcher Iván Herrera did it April 2, 2025, against the Angels. The 27-year-old became the first Cardinals first baseman with a three-homer game since current Yankees slugger Paul Goldschmidt on May 7, 2023.

CHC8/4 2:16 AM Clay Holmes (P-CHC) Cubs restock staff at deadline, acquire pitcher Clay Holmes and outfielder Tyrone Taylor from Mets. The Chicago Cubs have acquired pitcher Clay Holmes and outfielder Tyrone Taylor from the last-place New York Mets for touted infield prospect Jefferson Rojas. It’s the latest move by the busy Cubs to replenish an injury-depleted pitching staff as they attempt to chase down first-place Milwaukee in the NL Central or at least hang onto the National League’s top wild-card spot. Earlier in the day, Chicago obtained reliever Ryan Zeferjahn from the Los Angeles Angels for two minor leaguers. The Cubs also added left-hander Braxton Garrett from the Miami Marlins for a pair of minor leaguers. Those deals came one day after the Cubs augmented their rotation by acquiring veteran starter Kevin Gausman in a trade with the Toronto Blue Jays.

LAD8/4 2:15 AM Tarik Skubal (P-LAD) GM Brian Cashman says Yankees tried for Rutschman and Skubal before acquiring García and Ramos. General manager Brian Cashman says the New York Yankees had conversations with the Detroit Tigers about Tarik Skubal and the Baltimore Orioles about Adley Rutschman but could not work out a deal before Monday's trade deadline. Skubal was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers, and Rutschman went to the Boston Red Sox. Instead, the Yankees added outfielder Heliot Ramos from the last-place San Francisco Giants in a three-player swap, a day after acquiring first baseman Luis García Jr. from the Washington Nationals for four pitchers. García homered Monday night against St. Louis after hitting a career-high .283 in his first season as a full-time first baseman with Washington. Ramos batted .264 with nine homers and 34 RBIs in 74 games for the Giants.

PHI8/3 11:30 PM Derek Hill (OF-PHI) Derek Hill, right-handed outfield trade acquisition, lifts Phillies over Nationals in grand fashion. Maybe the Phillies missed a chance to trade for a difference-making right-handed-hitting outfielder before the trade deadline. Or maybe they’d already done it. In an extremely on-the-nose act of baseball poetry, Derek Hill played hero for the Phillies in their first game after the 6 p.m. ET trade deadline, which was headlined by Luis Arráez […]
