9/05/25 | Two key Tigers relievers are getting closer to a return. Two injured relievers are nearing a return for the Detroit Tigers. Veteran right-hander Paul Sewald, acquired from the Cleveland Guardians at the trade deadline, began a rehab assignment with High-A West Michigan on Thursday, throwing a scoreless first inning. Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said left-hander Brant Hurter, who is on the minor-league injured list, will return to the mound for Triple-A Toledo within the next few days. Both pitchers are strong candidates for the Tigers' postseason roster, making September outings especially important. Source: https://www.mlive.com/tigers/2025/09/two-key-tiger... |
8/28/25 | Tigers Could Get Back Another Key Bullpen Arm With Paul Sewald Progressing. The Detroit Tigers knew they needed to upgrade their bullpen ahead of the trade deadline. After fielding a unit that was incredible during the playoffs last year -- which allowed manager A.J. Hinch to use his "pitching chaos" strategy -- they have not quite been the same this season. Kyle Finnegan has been incredible since being acquired, not allowing a single run during his 10 appearances with the Tigers, striking out 15 batters with just two walks allowed across 11 2/3 innings pitched while going 4-for-4 on save opportunities. The right-hander has pitched just 18 times this season with the Cleveland Guardians -- the team that signed him this past winter -- before he suffered a right shoulder strain in mid-April. Sewald said he felt great, though he will be closely monitoring how he feels on Sunday and Monday. Sewald, 35, was acquired from the Cleveland Guardians for cash considerations or a player to be named later. Source: https://www.mlive.com/tigers/2025/08/tigers-reliev... |

On the latest Cleveland Baseball Talk Podcast, hosts Joe Noga and Paul Hoynes broke down the surprising impact of Paul Sewald and Jakob Junis, highlighting how they've stabilized a bullpen that seemed potentially vulnerable heading into the season. “These guys have gone out there and they've taken the ball every time Stephen Vogt has needed them and they've been effective, and in a lot of ways highly efficient as well, allowing them to come back and really preserve the back end of that bullpen that saw so much work last season,” Noga observed early in the discussion, pointing to their reliability factor.
