3/12/25 Cubs departure for Japan confirms inevitable roster move ahead of Opening Day. The Chicago Cubs have made their way to Japan and while the team does not have to officially announce their Opening Day roster until March 17, deductive reasoning can be used based on the players who traveled with the team. Most notably, top prospect Matt Shaw is with the team in Japan.

3/11/25 Who made the Chicago Cubs roster for their upcoming series in Tokyo — and who is staying back. The Chicago Cubs have finalized their travel roster for the season-opening series in Japan. Third baseman Matt Shaw is making the trip for the two-game Tokyo Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers, manager Craig Counsell told reporters Tuesday morning in Mesa, Ariz. Shaw’s spring training was slowed by a left oblique injury, limiting his reps. But the organization’s top prospect showed enough ...

3/07/25 Chicago Cubs Still Weighing Matt Shaw's Opening Day Status, Per Report. The Chicago Cubs have yet to rule top third base prospect Matt Shaw in or out for an Opening Day roster spot, The Athletic's Patrick Mooney reported Friday morning. The Cubs are starting their regular season earlier than most, playing the Los Angeles Dodgers in the Tokyo Series on March 18 and 19. Shaw, 23, has yet to make his MLB debut.

3/05/25 Prospect News: Alan Roden The Thinker or Matt Shaw Nuff. Until yesterday, Cubs 3B Matt Shaw has been one of those strange cases where a rookie could be acquired in redraft leagues for very little currency, relative to his skillset and opportunity. This discount can be attributed to the relatively recent clearout of Cubs’ third base options and the fact that Shaw has been injured and hadn’t played this spring. During Tuesday’s game, however, Shaw looked 100 percent, smoking an easy looking single to the opposite field in his first at bat and stroking another single in his second. On the bases that second time, he got a good read off the bat and sprinted to score from first base only to run into Michael Busch at third base when Busch pulled up after rounding third and retreated in spring training style. I mention the sprint because Shaw is clearly feeling good and pushing to make the team.

The Chicago Cubs open up their season earlier than the rest of the league when they take on the Los Angeles Dodgers in Tokyo, Japan. All offseason, the Cubs have been searching for somebody to earn the starting job at third base for the Tokyo series, and they thought they found someone to be that guy in top prospect Matt Shaw. Chicago's situation is unique as they take on the Dodgers in mid-March for the two-game international series.

2/17/25 Matt Shaw and the never-ending third base issue for the Chicago Cubs. During my almost 60 years as a Chicago Cubs fan, there have been many periods of time when third base has been a problem area for the Cubs. 2/16/25 Matt Shaw’s path to the opening-day third-base job is clear. Will the Chicago Cubs’ top prospect seize it?. MESA, Ariz. — Chicago Cubs top prospect Matt Shaw admittedly kept an eye on the team’s free-agent pursuit of third baseman Alex Bregman. The Massachusetts native received a text from a Red Sox friend, who ...

Per Bob Nightengale of USA Today, top prospect Matt Shaw is dealing with an oblique injury and will be sidelined for the time being. The good news is the Cubs do not believe the injury is going to be serious. As of Friday, February 14, Shaw is listed as day-to-day.

2/10/25 Matt Shaw, Alex Bregman at the forefront of Jed Hoyer's latest comments. There is a small but loud portion of the Chicago Cubs fanbase that is under the belief that Matt Shaw is already a perennial MVP candidate in the National League. Whenever potential moves were discussed for the Cubs this offseason, the same segment of fans were quick to point out how the Cubs needed to make sure Shaw was left with a spot in the starting lineup.

During an interview with The Setup Man, Chicago Cubs' top prospect Matt Shaw said he is more comfortable playing third base these days. With the team engulfed in rumors about signing two-time all-star Alex Bregman, it's nice to know Shaw seems mentally capable of handling the hot corner if they miss out on the top free agent.

1/27/25 Matt Shaw will enter Chicago Cubs camp with a shot to win the third-base job. Can he seize the opportunity?. Chicago Cubs top prospect Matt Shaw heads into spring training in a position that any player without an established role wants: a legitimate chance to make the opening-day roster. 1/06/25 Chicago Cubs Top Prospect Seen As Serious Contender For NL Rookie of Year. The Chicago Cubs head into the 2025 season needing to get some production out of players who don't have a ton of experience, but there's one prospect who has yet to take an MLB at bat who they obviously feel pretty good about. Cubs top prospect Matt Shaw is expected to make his big league debut this season, and it very well could be on Opening Day if everything goes according to plan. There's still a lot of offseason to play out and Chicago could look to acquire a third baseman after dealing away Isaac Paredes in the Kyle Tucker trade, but being willing to send Paredes out of town was obviously a clear sign they feel good about Shaw. Jed Hoyer talked about the 23-year-old last month and said he will have to earn the job, but Shaw will have every opportunity to seize control.

12/30/24 Chicago Cubs Reportedly 'Showing Serious Interest' in Resurgent Infielder. The Chicago Cubs are trying to figure out how their roster will look on Opening Day. It feels like their top prospect, Matt Shaw, is going to take over that position, and while he's going to have a chance to earn it in Spring Training and will eventually be manning the hot corner in an everyday role, that might not come immediately in 2025. The Cubs acquired super utility man Vidal Brujan who could take over at third when needed, but the latest report from Mark Feinsand of MLB.com suggests they are looking to fortify the infield group even further.
