A few hours later, the Cardinals bullpen gave up critical runs in the last third of the game against the Texas Rangers. A pair of Cardinals misplays in the field contributed to those runs, and a one-run deficit quickly turned into an uphill battle. Cardinals rookie relief pitcher Chris Roycroft left the door open by not covering first base in the 10h inning. The Miami Marlins walked through that door and earned a walk-off win to even their series. Marlins pinch hitter Vidal Brujan came off the bench and lined a 96.8-mph fastball from Roycroft into right field for an RBI single and handed the Cardinals a 9-8 extra-inning loss in the second game of the three-game series at loanDepot Park on Tuesday night.
