5/04/25 Bryce Rainer is learning in all ways Tigers life and a rookie's realities. Given what he experienced six pitches into his first official professional baseball game, Bryce Rainer's early spring for the Single A Lakeland Flying Tigers has been all the more imposing. On the mound was a left-handed starter named Griffin Herring, who a year ago was pitching for Louisiana State. At bat was a 20-year-old shortstop who last July was the Tigers' first-round choice and 10th overall pick in the 2024 MLB Draft. Rainer worked Herring to a 3-2 count.

A team that since the days of Alan Trammell has been chasing a homegrown, All-Star-grade shortstop believed Sunday night it got one in Bryce Rainer, 19, a 6-foot-3, 195-pound, left-handed hitter from Harvard-Westlake High in Westwood, California, who was Detroit's choice in the first round of the 2024 MLB Draft. Rainer was considered, alongside Mississippi prep standout Konnor Griffin, as the premier high school shortstop in America. The Tigers would not have expected Rainer to fall to their first turn, at No. 11 overall.
