On a recent early morning in camp, shortly before the Phillies were scheduled to depart for a road game in Lakeland, Fla., Dante Nori passed through the clubhouse. The 2024 first-round pick had been called up from minor league camp as a reserve for the Phillies' Grapefruit League game against the Tigers that March 1 afternoon. The clubhouse at BayCare Ballpark was filled with major league regulars and can be an intimidating place for some prospects, especially ones experiencing their first professional spring. The Philadelphia Phillies just signed their first-round pick, outfielder Dante Nori, but that didn't change the team's standing in Baseball America's Top 100 prospects. The new edition of the rankings were released after the MLB Draft and included those selections. Only a few made it, and the Phillies remained flush with top talent, as four of their prospects made the Top 100. The Philadelphia Phillies announced the signing of their first-round pick, outfielder Dante Nori, as the team has signed nearly all of its draft picks before the deadline next week. The Phillies have until 5 p.m. eastern Aug. 1 to sign their entire draft class. Nori played for Northville High School in Northville, Mich. While the Phillies did not disclose the terms of his deal, MLB Pipeline reported that he signed a $2.5 million bonus, which was well below the slot value for the No. 27 overall selection, which was $3.228 million. That gave the Phillies extra money for some of their other selections, as they had a salary bonus pool of $7.381 million for this year's class. | 7/17/24 | JAY DUNN: Phillies' draft selection of Dante Nori at No. 27 is about the money. When Baseball America published its pre-draft edition it ranked Northville (Michigan) High School center fielder Dante Nori 81st among the draft class. MLB Pipeline was a little kinder to him, placing him 48th. He was drafted by the Phillies on the first round — No. 27 overall. What's going on here? How can a single player be 27th, 48th and 81st? Or — more bluntly — who goofed? Strangely enough, I don't believe anybody goofed. Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski has clearly demonstrated that he knows how to run a successful major league baseball operation.
