2/22/25 Red Sox rookie lefty will be 'out for a while' but surgery isn't an option. The Red Sox received relatively good on lefty reliever Zach Penrod but still expect him to miss a good chunk of time with an elbow injury. Penrod's MRI revealed no structural damage and he's not a candidate for Tommy John surgery or another procedure, manager Alex Cora said Saturday. After initial tests led to a pessimistic outlook on his status, more exams showed that his ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) is intact. “He's gonna be out for a while,” Cora said.

2/21/25 Red Sox provide unhelpful update on Zach Penrod's troubling elbow injury. Boston Red Sox pitcher Zach Penrod has undergone an MRI to examine soreness in his elbow, according to Christopher Smith of MassLive on Twitter. According to Rob Bradford of WEEI, the Red Sox have already made a move, adding reliever Matt Moore to bring another lefty arm to camp — it seems Boston is covering its bases.

2/20/25 Red Sox rookie lefty gets MRI after experiencing elbow soreness. Red Sox lefty Zach Penrod underwent an MRI on his elbow Wednesday after experiencing soreness in the area, manager Alex Cora said Thursday. Penrod, who is on the 40-man roster after making his big league debut late in 2024, is awaiting results. With the 27-year-old potentially facing an absence, the Sox struck to add veteran depth to their group of left-handed relievers, agreeing to a minor league contract with former All-Star Matt Moore. Newcomers Aroldis Chapman and Justin Wilson are bullpen locks, while Brennan Bernardino and Penrod are also on the 40-man roster, as is rehabbing southpaw Chris Murphy.

11/18/24 Red Sox CBO is uncertain about LHP's role with the club in 2025. After another disappointing season, the Boston Red Sox have a lot of decisions to make, including which pitchers they'll keep on the roster and in what roles for the 2025 season. One of those pitchers in question is left-handed hurler Zach Penrod. The 27-year-old originally signed with the Texas Rangers as an undrafted free agent in 2018. After he was released in 2020, he bounced around an independent league for two years before signing with the Red Sox in August 2023.

9/17/24 'Roller coaster' ride takes Idaho native from obscurity to MLB roster in just one year. The roller-coaster ride for Nampa native Zach Penrod reached a new high Saturday. The left-handed pitcher made his Major League debut for the Boston Red Sox, throwing a scoreless eighth inning at Yankee Stadium. “I keep using the term roller coaster because that's the only way I can really describe it,” Penrod, 27, told the Boston Globe.

9/14/24 Red Sox Prospect's MLB Call-Up Might Be Most Heartwarming Of 2024. The Boston Red Sox addressed their gut-punching 5-4 loss to the New York Yankees on Friday night by welcoming a few new faces to the bullpen, including 27-year-old Zach Penrod, who's undergone a tedious, not-so-typical route to achieving his all-time dream of reaching the big league level. Penrod initially signed with the Texas Rangers in 2018 as an undrafted free agent after two years of collegiate baseball, including one with Division II Northwest Nazarene in Idaho. After joining Texas, Penrod underwent Tommy John surgery and missed the entire 2019 season. Fast forward to August 2023 and Penrod received another shot at the big leagues, this time from Boston where he's catapulted from Single-A Greenville to Double-A Portland to Triple-A Worcester, and now to the Red Sox in roughly a calendar year.
