Pirates oufielder Ronny Simon came on as a pinch-runner in the top of the seventh inning vs. the Boston Red Sox in the series opener at Fenway Park on Aug. 29. SImon made it to third base on a single from Pirates first baseman Spencer Horwitz and then broke for home plate off a sacrifice bunt from catcher Henry Davis in the next at-bat. The Pittsburgh Pirates came back after an early blown lead, but still fell short on a walk-off in a 7-6 defeat to the St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium. The Pirates end their four-game winning streak, as they swept the Colorado Rockies at PNC Park, Aug. 22-24, and won the series finale vs. the Toronto Blue Jays on Aug. 20. | 6/02/25 | Pirates claim Ronny Simon off waivers from Marlins; Tanner Rainey designated for assignment. The Pittsburgh Pirates were off but the front office made a move on Monday, claiming infielder-outfielder Ronny Simon off waivers from the Miami Marlins.Simon, 25, has played in only 19 games at the major league level, batting .234 with five RBI, .327 on-base percentage and .277 slugging. The Pirates optioned him to Triple-A Indianapolis.Simon was designated for assignment by Miami on Friday, just days after the switch-hitting rookie made three errors in three innings in a game against the Padres.To make room on the 40-man roster, right-handed reliever Tanner Rainey was designated for assignment by the Pirates.
