New York Mets reliever Brooks Raley will be out “longer than anticipated,” according to manager Carlos Mendoza, as he continues recovering from a left elbow injury. “It's one of those where inflammation went down and he's still playing catch, but he's not going to be as quick as we thought it was going to be,” Mendoza told reporters on Thursday before the Mets' series finale against the Chicago Cubs (h/t SNY). Raley was originally placed on 15-day IL on April 21 due to what was described as elbow inflammation and was eligible to return from the IL next week. “We're not going to be as aggressive as we thought when he went down originally,” Mendoza added. The Mets opened the season 0-5 and to some, the sky was falling, according to Brooks Raley. “People were talking about 1960-something and how long we could go without winning a game,” the reliever said Monday. But at least one person didn't panic, Raley added: rookie manager Carlos Mendoza. “It's tough for a first-time manager to have an 0-5 start,” Raley said. “We all wanted to see how he would react.
