3/24/24 Cubs release reliever Carl Edwards Jr., infielder Dominic Smith. MESA, Ariz. -- The Chicago Cubs released reliever Carl Edwards Jr . and infielder Dominic Smith on Sunday. Edwards and Smith were in camp on minor league contracts. The 32-year-old Edwards was trying to make the Cubs' roster again after he broke into the majors with the team in 2015. He spent the past two years with Washington, going 7-6 with four saves and a 3.07 ERA in 89 appearances. Edwards missed most of last season after he was placed on the injured list in June with right shoulder inflammation. But he looked healthy in spring training, posting a 1.35 ERA in 6 2/3 innings over seven appearances. Smith played for Washington last season, hitting .254 with 12 homers and 46 RBIs in a career-best

2/17/24 Edwards trying to make the Cubs again after helping the team win the 2016 World Series. The memories came rushing back to Carl Edwards Jr. right when he arrived for another spring training with the Chicago Cubs. Edwards is trying to make the Cubs' roster again after he broke into the majors with the team in 2015. The wiry reliever agreed to a minor league deal with Chicago last month that included an invitation to big league camp for spring training. “Last year cut short a little bit by injury but a reliever in this league who's had success, so I think health is important for him for sure,” Cubs manager Craig Counsell said.

11/27/23 Finding bullpen help for the Mets, Part 5. The Mets have many needs this offseason, but the bullpen is certainly one of them. The list gets less exciting as we run down the options by their 2023 ERA, but it's possible—if not highly likely—that a bunch of these options could still be upgrades for the Mets. Carl Edwards Jr.: Having put himself on the map with a decent rookie season in 2016 and a pair of very good seasons in 2017 and 2018 with the Cubs, Edwards struggled mightily and didn't pitch all that much between 2019 and 2021. During the latter stretch, he bounced around from the Cubs to the Padres to the Mariners to the Braves to the Blue Jays, and he threw just 27.1 innings in total with a 7.90 ERA.
