7/05/23 Yankees pitcher Cordero is suspended for the rest of the season under MLB's domestic violence policy. New York Yankees pitcher Jimmy Cordero has been suspended for the rest of the season by baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred for violating the sport’s domestic violence policy. MLB says the 31-year-old right-hander accepted the suspension and will miss the season’s final 76 games and the postseason. Cordero was 3-2 with a 3.86 ERA in one start and 30 relief appearances and has a $720,000 salary, the major league minimum. He missed the 2021 season after Tommy John surgery while with the Chicago White Sox organization and spent 2022 with the Yankees’ Triple-A team at Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. The Yankees said in a statement they supported MLB’s discipline and “there is no justification for domestic violence.”

6/18/23 Wandy Peralta and Albert Abreu are toeing the regression line. Despite providing increasing support for an undermanned Yankees' starting staff, the bullpen has held up quite nicely over these first few months of the season, entering play on Saturday with the top ERA in the majors at 2.89, and the American League in LOB% (77.6). Nine different arms have pitched at least 10 innings in relief, and the worst ERA+ of the bunch is from Jimmy Cordero at 117, still well above league average. The two guys who raise the most concern in that area, looking ahead at the rest of the season, are the veteran southpaw Wandy Peralta, and the right-hander Albert Abreu. Peralta has been a stalwart arm that Boone isn't afraid to turn to in those dicey situations with runners on, whatever the need, Wandy is up for the task.

5/15/23 Podument Park Ep. 9: Not Dead Yet?. It would have been c'est magnifique to have not blown that game on Sunday (and rest assured, we do get into some Aaron Boone/Albert Abreu frustrations) to win that four-game series against the Rays rather than settling for a split, but still, the Yankees have been playing much better lately. The Yankees have another crucial series with a division rival coming up this week as they head up to Toronto to face the Blue Jays (note that this was recorded prior to Jimmy Cordero being announced as Monday's opener for Jhony Brito).

4/26/23 The Yankees are optimizing Jimmy Cordero. It's still only been three weeks and nine appearances, but Jimmy Cordero is already starting to fit snugly into the mold formed by the likes of Clay Holmes, Wandy Peralta, Lucas Luetge, Scott Effross, or Joely Rodríguez, among others. Relievers with unique traits or, as with Cordero, outlier stuff just a few tweaks away from being translated into elite results. Cordero's early 3.24 ERA (three runs in 8.2 innings) with 11 punchouts and a single base on balls isn't elite — yet — but it's definitely exciting enough to warrant a closer look. In his case, the outlier stuff the Yankees were drawn to when they signed him to a minor league deal prior to the 2022 season is top-of-the-line velocity that certainly doesn't come easy, aesthetically speaking, but is as consistent as it gets.

4/25/23 Sequence of the Week: Jimmy Cordero vs. Anthony Rendon (4/18). When it comes to the aesthetics of pitching speeds, paces, and approaches, Jimmy Cordero joyously occupies the end of the spectrum opposite to Pedro Martínez or, more contemporaneously, Johnny Cueto. Tomorrow, I'll be bringing you some more technical, less badly-poetic details about how Cordero, whose ERA still sits at a solid 3.24 even after the earned run that Franchy Cordero bestowed upon him last night. Today, we're talking about a different Jimmy Cordero sequence, one that hints at why he may be a true weapon for the Yankees as the season goes on. Anthony Rendon, who has swung at just under 12 percent of the 0-0 pitches he's seen, ninth-lowest in the league.

9/17/21 White Sox: 3 players who may have played their last game. Jimmy Cordero The Chicago White Sox may not need to use Jimmy Cordero once he is healthy again. Jimmy Cordero was once Rick Renteria’s favorite relief pitcher. He appeared in 30 of the White Sox 60 games in 2020.

5/25/21 White Sox: Jimmy Cordero's Instagram post is very interesting. Jimmy Cordero’s Instagram post is certainly something to get Chicago White Sox fans excited. This isn’t the first time that Eloy’s return has been hinted at it. Jimenez himself hinted at it last week with a post on Instagram.

7/26/19 Twins slugger Nelson Cruz homers 3 times against White Sox.

CHICAGO (AP) — Minnesota Twins slugger Nelson Cruz homered three times in the first five innings against the Chicago White Sox on Thursday night.

Cruz hit a solo drive in the first, a two-run shot in the third and another two-run homer in the fifth. It's the first career three-homer game for the six-time All-Star, who has 385 home runs in his career.

Cruz batted again with a runner on first in the sixth and struck out swinging against Jimmy Cordero, ending the inning. He flied out to right leading off the ninth.

Max Kepler also went deep against All-Star Lucas Giolito, helping the Twins build a 10-3 lead.

Cruz's outburst followed three-homer games by New York Mets second baseman Robinson Canó on Tuesday night and St. Louis Cardinals shortstop Paul DeJong on Wednesday. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, it's the first time in major league history there's been a three-homer game on three consecutive days.

The 39-year-old Cruz, who signed a $14.3 million, one-year contract with Minnesota in January, has six homers in his last four games and 25 overall this season. According to STATS, he is the oldest player in major league history to hit six-plus homers in a four-game span, surpassing Barry Bonds, who hit seven in four games at age 36 in 2001.

Cruz also became the 10th player in big league history with a three-homer game after turning 39, according to Baseball Prospectus, joining a list that includes Babe Ruth, Stan Musial, Reggie Jackson, Dave Winfield, Frank Thomas and Álex Rodríguez.
