7/11/25 Cubs trade pitch brings $56 million pitcher to Chicago as NL Central lead fades. The Chicago Cubs' lead in the National League Central is down to two games entering play on Friday. The Cubs will be without Justin Steele for the rest of the season. Jameson Taillon is also expected to miss an extended period of time after a calf injury. The rotation was already week before the injury to Taillon, so there may be a sense of urgency to add a starter.

7/10/25 Cubs Prospect Could Be Key to Landing Pirates' All-Star Ace. The next few weeks are going to be incredibly important for the Chicago Cubs as they look to acquire some starting pitching help ahead of the MLB trade deadline. It is the only weak area that currently exists on the team in large part because Justin Steele was lost to a season-ending injury. Without him in the mix, there is a lot of pressure on Shota Imanaga and Matthew Boyd to carry the load for the rotation. Jameson Taillon, Cade Horton, Colin Rea and Ben Brown have all underwhelmed.

7/10/25 Starting Pitchers That Make Most Sense for Cubs to Acquire at Trade Deadline. The Chicago Cubs have one clear need that has to be addressed ahead of the MLB trade deadline this year: starting pitching. Losing Justin Steele to a season-ending injury was a significant blow to a team that already have a need for a front-end starter. Shota Imanaga has spent a chunk of the campaign on the injured list as well, making only 11 starts. The fact the Cubs have been able to survive this long in the starting rotation without them speaks volumes to how productive the other parts of the team have been.

7/06/25 Cubs Reportedly Have Aggressive Deadline Mentality To Acquire Starting Pitching. The Chicago Cubs need help in their rotation. Already without Justin Steele for the remainder of this season and much of the next, the loss of Jameson Taillon to the injured list is a huge blow for a unit that already didn't have much depth coming into the year when those two were healthy. Getting Shota Imanaga back has been important, but if the Cubs are going to make a serious run in October, then adding some more high-end pitching should be their No. 1 target ahead of the upcoming trade deadline. According to Patrick Mooney of The Athletic (subscription required), that is the mentality the organization has right now.

7/04/25 Cubs Should Pursue Athletics Star Pitcher Who Is Now on Trade Block. Adding a starting pitcher is a must for the Chicago Cubs. With Justin Steele out of the mix for the rest of the season, their already-thin rotation has been pushed to the limit during the past couple of months. The return of Shota Imanaga came at the perfect time and was very welcome, but to truly make a deep run in the playoffs, the front office has to add another ace-caliber arm to the equation. The veteran right-hander had a resurgent year with the New York Mets last season, posting a 3.91 ERA in 31 starts that was reminiscent of what he did before his shoulder and elbow injuries.
