The St. Louis Cardinals acquired right-handed reliever Andrew Kittredge from the Tampa Bay Rays for outfielder Richie Palacios in an attempt to fortify their bullpen, which was a major contributor to a disappointing 2022 season. The 33-year-old Kittredge was an All-Star in 2021, when he appeared in a career-high 57 games with a 1.88 ERA. “We are excited to add Andrew’s experience and proven abilities,” Cardinals president John Mozeliak said.

Kittredge, 33, has not pitched since June 7, 2022, after undergoing Tommy John surgery. In six seasons with the Rays, the 2021 American League All-Star is 16-7 with a 3.68 ERA in 167 outings (15 starts). Perez, 27, made his Rays debut Wednesday and gave up one run in a third of an inning against the San Francisco Giants. The Tampa Bay Rays reinstated closer Peter Fairbanks from the 15-day injured list and optioned right-hander Chris Muller to Triple-A Durham on Monday. Fairbanks, who hasn't pitched since April 28, has been sidelined by inflammation near his right wrist. Tampa Bay's bullpen has been affected by injuries all season. Right-handers Andrew Kittredge (Tommy John surgery) and Shawn Armstrong (neck) have not appeared in a game in 2023, while lefty Garrett Cleavinger sprained his right knee on May 8 and could miss the rest of the season.

The Tampa Bay Rays withdrew their transactions of placing reliever Andrew Kittredge on the 60-day injured iist and selecting the contract of right-hander Trevor Kelley to the 40-man roster. The decision on Friday came after the commissoner's office failed to approve the transactions, made a day earlier. Tampa Bay could select Kelley to the roster March 15 or later. Kittredge is recovering from Tommy John surgery and last pitched on June 7.
