In case you didn't hear, the Mariners made a roster move today, sending Diego Castillo, who surprisingly still had options, to Tacoma, and summoning Easton McGee to make today's start. If you listened to last week's LL pod or read the newser on Robbie Ray's injury announcement, you probably remember me saying Easton McGee had the inside track to being the next man up as the Mariners were obviously intentionally stretching out the one-time reliever in Tacoma. If you want a more in-depth dive on McGee, check out his 40 in 40 (and good luck trying to get “Me and Bobby McGee” out of your head), but here's the tl;dr: he's not a strikeout artist, but gets a lot of ground balls with his sinker. The Seattle Mariners won the first salary arbitration decision of the year over relief pitcher Diego Castillo, who will get a raise to $2.95 million rather than his request of $3,225,000. Richard Bloch, Melinda Gordon and Brian Keller made the decision Wednesday, a day after hearing arguments. A 29-year-old right-hander who made $2.15 million last season, Castillo was 7-3 with a 3.64 ERA and seven saves in 59 relief appearances, striking out 53 and walking 22 in 54 1/3 innings. While that’s my concept of the deadline, the last few years has shown us that Mariners GM Jerry Dipoto’s philosophy is a little different. He hasn’t made huge moves to go big in either direction. Misiewicz fell behind 3-1 and left a fastball at the top of the zone that Bradley, who had just two hits in 17 plate appearances against lefties this season, could drive. Instead of hoping that it might improve in the next few days, the Mariners decided to place Castillo on the 10-day injured list with right shoulder inflammation before Saturday’s game vs. the Astros. After a miserable Trashstros trouncing, the Mariners announced that they were placing Diego Castillo on the 10-day IL with right shoulder inflammation, and subsequently recalling Robert Dugger from Tacoma. The move is retroactive to yesterday, Aug. 20, but Castillo hasn’t looked 100% in…a while.
