Closer Carlos Estévez, through June 9 of last year, was having a season for the ages with a 1.37 ERA and averaging 11 strikeouts per nine innings. Us fans thought Arte Moreno finally got something right on the pitching side of the ball. By the end of the 2023 season, Estévez had an ERA approaching four, averaging at least a hit an inning and 4.5 walks per nine innings. The Chicago Cubs have been linked to the Cleveland Guardians on a variety of different trade proposals this off-season with American League All-Star closer Emmanuel Clase being a primary topic of conversation between the two teams. Given Clase's team-friendly contract, the asking price likely is high and an update from Jon Morosi of MLB Network would suggest that a team hasn't been willing to meet the demand.
