Yankees manager Aaron Boone hates it when he's asked how his roster will be affected when an injured player gets healthy, so he hasn't and won't speculate about who will be dropped from the rotation when Gerrit Cole starts his season in June or July. Maybe it'll be sometimes erratic lefty Nestor Cortes instead of Luis Gil, who no longer is just a youngster with an injury history throwing 99 with a nasty slider and much-improved changeup. New York Yankees starting pitcher Luis Gil had every reason in the world to have the jitters going into Tuesday night's game. Running catches by Juan Soto and Alex Verdugo robbed the Houston Astros of base hits and the chance to score. Verdugo came in especially clutch in the final two outs of the sixth inning, tracking out No. 2 to the corner of the warning track and then dashing into no man's land for the final out. Luis Gil outdueled Corbin Burnes, Oswaldo Cabrera hit a two-run homer in the fifth inning and the New York Yankees topped the Baltimore Orioles 2-0. Gil allowed two hits and a walk over a career-high 6 1/3 innings in another low-scoring game between the top two teams in the AL East. Baltimore began this four-game series with victories of 2-0 and 4-2, but Gil’s performance helped the Yankees ensure they weren’t swept. It was the longest outing of Luis Gil's career — and the longest of Clay Holmes' season. The New York Yankees needed them both to be extra sharp against a strong Baltimore lineup. After dropping the first two games of this series between the top two teams in the AL East, New York edged the Orioles 2-0 on Wednesday night, with Gil throwing 6 1/3 innings and Holmes contributing a five-out save after Baltimore threatened late.
