8/30/23 Royals' Angel Zerpa aims to prevent sweep vs. Pirates. The Kansas City Royals will turn to left-hander Angel Zerpa on Wednesday in their effort to avert a three-game series sweep against the visiting Pittsburgh Pirates. Zerpa (1-2, 7.27 ERA) is getting the starting nod in place of Brady Singer, who will miss Wednesday's scheduled start against Pittsburgh due to arm fatigue. Singer, the Royals' most consistent starter, leads the club in wins (eight), innings pitched (143 1/3) and strikeouts (125). "The plan right now is to skip this start," Royals general manager J.J. Picollo said prior to Monday's loss.

8/17/23 Julio, et non alii, defeats the Royals 6-4. It is through this lens that Julio Rodríguez has delivered exactly the heroism the Seattle Mariners needed to lock up a 6-4 victory and take three of four from the lowly Kansas City Royals. Today's breakfast baseball seemed ripe for a chance to take the dismal Royals to task, but like the rest of this series, little came easy. A leadoff single from Julio stretched to second by a throwing error gave Seattle an early threat, but the M's could not capitalize off 23-year-old semi-spot-starter Angel Zerpa. In the second, a hit by pitch and a seeing eye single placed Jose Caballero and Cade Marlowe at third and first, bringing Julio up once more, now with two outs.

Foreign nationals who aren’t vaccinated against COVID-19 are not allowed to enter Canada, save for limited exceptions that require a 14-day quarantine. Unvaccinated baseball players are placed on the restricted list, which means they are not paid and do not accrue major league service time.

Among the 10 players on Kansas City’s 26-man roster who stayed home were All-Star outfielder Andrew Benintendi, two-time All-Star Whit Merrifield, future cornerstones Kyle Isbel and MJ Melendez and outfielder Michael A. Taylor.

Also barred were first baseman Hunter Dozier, right-handed starters Brad Keller and Brady Singer, reliever Dylan Coleman and backup catcher Cam Gallagher.

“We just abide by the rules that are given to us,” Matheny said before the game. “It’s not how we’d design it but it is where we are and now we move forward.”

The Royals recalled infielder Nick Pratto and selected Eaton, infielder Michael Massey, catcher Freddy Fermin and outfielder Brewer Hicklen from Triple-A Omaha. Infielder Maikel Garcia, catcher Sebastian Rivero and left-hander Zerpa were recalled from Double-A Northwest Arkansas.

Pratto was in the starting lineup at first base and Eaton was in center field with Rivero catching Zerpa (2-0), who allowed one run and four hits, walked two and struck out two in the second start of his career and first this season.
