2/01/24 Former Michigan State slugger-turned-pitcher signs minor league deal with Diamondbacks. Brandon Hughes will get a shot with a new MLB team. The former Michigan State standout signed a minor league deal with the Arizona Diamondbacks as a non-roster invitee to spring training, the club announced Thursday. Hughes, a 28-year-old left-handed relief pitcher, spent the last two seasons with Chicago Cubs.

10/22/23 Chicago Cubs Rumors: Yuki Matsui continues to be a name mentioned for relief help. With second-year reliever Brandon Hughes struggling to stay healthy during the 2023 season, the Chicago Cubs were left without a true left-handed relief option in their bullpen. The success of veteran reliever Mark Leiter Jr's reverse splits could only take the team so far when pressed for an option to get left-handed hitters out late in games and that seems to be an area that the Cubs will address this off-season. In a more direct connection, Bruce Levine of 670 The Score reported during his Saturday morning radio show, Inside The Clubhouse, that Matsui is a name that is being heard associated with the Cubs this off-season.

6/03/23 Cubs 2, Padres 1: At last, the bullpen comes through. You, the reader of this recap, are a Cubs fan. Thus, like me, you were watching the last few innings of Friday night's game wondering: In what spectacular yet entertaining fashion were the Cubs going to do that in this one? Instead, Brandon Hughes, Julian Merryweather, Adbert Alzolay and Mark Leiter Jr. combined for 3? innings of scoreless relief, striking out seven, as the Cubs opened their California road trip with a 2-1 win over the Padres. Perhaps even better was Jameson Taillon, at last, looking like the guy the Cubs thought they were getting when they signed him to a four-year, $68 million deal this past offseason.

5/01/23 How Brandon Hughes' return to the IL with left knee inflammation will shake up the Chicago Cubs bullpen. Learning how to manage left knee inflammation is part of Chicago Cubs left-hander Brandon Hughes' everyday reality. The issue stems from Hughes' 2015 surgery to repair the meniscus in his left knee. Since then, his left knee has no cartilage and is essentially bone-on-bone, Hughes explained, constantly leading to inflammation.

4/29/23 Cubs put Brandon Hughes on IL for recurring left knee inflammation. Cubs reliever Brandon Hughes landed on the 15-day injured list with inflammation in his left knee for the second time this season. Hughes' left knee injury, which flared up this spring, stems from a 2015 surgery to repair his meniscus. The fact that the inflammation is recurring, when he's successfully managed the issue up to this point, is a cause for some concern. “I think the main concern is just finding a great routine and maintenance plan that can help him perform at a high level and have that thing not flare up on him,” manager David Ross said.

4/26/23 Tatis, Cronenworth lead Padres past Cubs 5-3. With runners at second and third in the seventh, Tatis hit Brandon Hughes' 2-1 slider past diving Cubs third baseman Patrick Wisdom to score both and give the Padres a 4-3 lead. Tatis played his sixth game since returning from an 80-game drug suspension. The 24-year-old Tatis missed all of last season, first because of a broken left wrist.

4/15/23 Cubs reinstate left-hander Brandon Hughes, option outfielder Nelson Velázquez. For the first time this season, the Cubs have a left-hander in their bullpen. Before facing the Dodgers on Saturday, the Cubs reinstated lefty Brandon Hughes from the 15-day IL. In a corresponding move, they optioned outfielder Nelson Velázquez to Triple-A Iowa. Velázquez has only played two games since the Cubs recalled him this past week, first as a defensive replacement and then as a starter in right field against the Mariners.

4/13/23 2023 Cubs Heroes and Goats: Game 11. As to the Cubs without Dansby on Wednesday, the news was less good. When Brandon Hughes follows him off of the injured list, the Cubs will then have all of their key pieces for the first time this year. Well, unless the ghost of Kyle Hendricks can dial history back a few years. A healthy Suzuki certainly helps that equation.

3/24/23 Cactus League report: Tim Anderson reflects on 'cool' WBC experience — and would the Cubs open with no lefties in the bullpen?. With opening day only six days away, the Chicago Cubs and White Sox have some important roster decisions to make before the end of Cactus League games. The final rosters aren't due until the morning of opening day Thursday, so teams can bring extra players with them as they break camp and wait to finalize their decisions. Injuries obviously will factor into the moves, and Cubs left-hander Brandon Hughes' left knee soreness could determine how the bullpen looks. In a roster move Thursday, the Sox optioned right-hander Davis Martin to Triple-A Charlotte.

3/08/23 Is it a problem that Cubs' bullpen only has one lefty?. The Cubs' player development department can take a bow for their long-term vision in transforming minor-league outfielder Brandon Hughes into a dependable late-inning left-handed rookie last season. Given the implementation of the three-batter minimum in 2020, there is consideration to carrying Hughes as their lone lefty in the bullpen when they open the season in three weeks. “We'll figure out how to get lefties out some way,” manager David Ross said Wednesday. Ross hasn't ruled out any of his six non-roster invitees, although free veteran free-agent lefty Zack Britton remains available.

3/04/23 How the Chicago Cubs are handling the spring workloads for pitchers Brandon Hughes and Keegan Thompson. For a period after his first big-league season ended, left-hander Brandon Hughes reviewed a bunch of his outings. Hughes’ role in the Chicago Cubs bullpen transitioned from unexpected call-up in May to high-leverage opportunities by August. So he took time to look back on a season that began at Double-A Tennessee and ended with eight saves, a 3.12 ERA and 132 ERA+ over 57 appearances for the ...

1/26/23 Is Former Red Sox Reliever Barnes Really the Answer for the Cubs?. The Chicago Cubs aren't done adding just yet. If the true intention is to contend then the bullpen will need to be addressed ahead of Opening Day. Currently, the Cubs have just one lefty in the bullpen in Brandon Hughes.

8/16/22 Cruz's eighth-inning homer lifts Nationals over Cubs 5-4.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Nelson Cruz hit a tiebreaking solo homer in the eighth inning to lift the Washington Nationals to a 5-4 victory over the Chicago Cubs on Monday night.

Cruz, who hit a two-run double in the fifth, smacked a 1-1 pitch from Brandon Hughes (1-1) to center to snap a 4-all tie with one out in the eighth. It was Cruz's ninth homer of the season and first since June 25.

“He's been working really hard on getting the ball in the air,” Nationals manager Dave Martinez said. “He's hitting the ball but it hasn't really been in the air, and to get that ball in the air and hit it the way he did was awesome.”

Cruz is 9 for 25 (.360) over his past eight games.

“It’s about adjustments. You’ve got to adjust on the fly. Even (between) at-bats,” he said. “I’ve been more consistent hitting the ball and swinging at strikes. That’s the key.”

Carl Edwards Jr. (4-3) pitched a scoreless eighth inning and Kyle Finnegan worked the ninth for his fifth save.

Ian Happ hit two solo homers for the Cubs, including a drive into the second deck in right center, giving him three in his past three games.

Washington recalled shortstop prospect CJ Abrams from Triple-A Rochester on Monday and he went 0 for 4 with a throwing error in his Nationals debut. Abrams, 21, was one of five prospects obtained from the San Diego Padres in the Juan Soto-Josh Bell trade on Aug. 2.

Starter Josiah Gray allowed three runs on five hits for Washington. He walked two and struck out 10.

Lane Thomas and Yadiel Hernandez had two hits apiece for the Nationals, who had lost nine of 11.

Cubs starter Marcus Stroman allowed four unearned runs on six hits in 4 2/3 innings.

Trailing 3-0, the Nationals rallied during a four-run fifth inning started when Lane Thomas...
