Brewers rookie relief pitcher Gus Varland was struck by a 105 mph line drive off the bat of Padres star Manny Machado on Saturday — and somehow seemed to escape without a major injury. Varland, 26, threw a hanging slider in the bottom of the eighth inning in San Diego, and Machado mashed the ball right back at Varland, who collapsed to the ground as Machado was thrown out at first. Varland managed to get his right hand up to block some of the ball, which did hit part of his jaw, and he managed to get back up quickly before taking a knee. Scary play.
